Origin

I seek answers to the unique familial norms with which I grew up by tracing my cultural origin to my parents’ wedding. In observing the wedding attire, traditions, and relationships, I found many cultural similarities with my current life and family. I examined archives from the wedding, Chinese reception, and post-reception Korean tea ceremony. During extended family gatherings, I have been acutely aware of each nuclear family’s level of cultural diversity. In observing my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins, I have realized that despite our shared blood, each family has an original version of their cultural identity. Therefore, I was eager to elaborate more on my perspective on family and the union of two seemingly similar, yet distinct cultures: Chinese and Korean.
