Toni Servillo delivers a riveting performance as the head guard of a remote Sardinian prison scheduled to be shut down. While Ariaferma explores the well-trodden terrain of the alliances that develop among inmates and guards, it leads the genre of the prison-movie into new territory by focusing on such unexpected elements as architecture and food. An intense and unusual film, Ariaferma asks a great deal of us as viewers, richly rewarding our willingness to take up the challenge.
Each April, the Film and Media Studies Program in conjunction with the Italian Department stages a four-day festival of recent Italian films. With introductions and post-screening discussions, you won’t want to miss this special showcase!
