Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960, 35mm, 90 mins)
New print! A defining film of the French New Wave, Godard’s debut is “a thoroughgoing assault on the accepted grammar of filmmaking” (Sam Wigley) and is marked by “a cavalier insouciance that feels like liberation” (A.O. Scott). Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg deliver career-defining performances as a thief and his American girlfriend, with a supporting cast that includes Rivette, Melville, and Godard himself. In French with English subtitles. 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.
The “Treasures from the Yale Film Archive” series is presented with support from Paul L. Joskow ’70 M.Phil., ’72 Ph.D.
