A pay-what-you-can screening at the New Haven Free Public Library…Q&A with Green Thumb, Brown Hand director Mya Saree’ Gray moderated by NHdocs’ Katherine Kowalczyk immediately follows the screening. Green Thumb, Brown Hand is a documentary film about the current food desert condition of Waterbury, Connecticut. The history of farming and agriculture in Waterbury is rich and vast. But after industrialization which made the city’s economy boom, the city left behind its farming ways. As it is now, individuals in Waterbury have little to no resources for fresh, locally grown produce. And the major grocery stores provide produce that arrives from long distances like California, that are overpriced, and that are sprayed with chemicals and pesticides, and much of it genetically modified. All while bodegas and convenience stores layer the urban minority communities.
