Riobaldo, a jagunço [term used to refer to a mercenary, outlaw, or enforcer in the backlands of Brazil] reminisces his turbulent youth in the backlands. He recounts his experiences as a member of a band led by Joca Ramiro, and, later on, his own leadership of the band after Ramiro’s death.The plot is marked by the presence of an enigmatic character named Diadorim, that becomes Riobaldo’s great friend and awakens complex feelings within him. Diadorim is a constant mystery to Riobaldo and his true identity is only revealed at the climax of the story. The narrative of blood-spattered conflicts in the back-lands is nonlinear, intertwined with philosophical reflections, popular beliefs,legends,tradition and scenes of life. Based on Guimarães Rosa’s masterpiece, Grande sertão: veredas (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands).
